The Flags
America pt.II
The cover of JFK Jr.s George magazine (remember that?) ran a story about the danger of beauty. Gisele was the cover model and in all her beauty she posed in front of what would become one of my more important paintings, this of the American flag. I remember everyone that came across it fell in love with it, all for many different reasons than I would have guessed. My role as an artist has always been a clear one, my art has to communicate and create emotion in the viewer and this painting was doing that in waves. I decided right then that i would create a series of flag paintings and off i went painting and painting away knowing little of what was to become.
The events of 9/11 are still a fresh tragedy in all our minds. For me, that day after my birthday, the day all of our worlds changed. Suddenly there were flags everywhere and although I only created a small handful, I knew that painting any more at that time was now inappropriate. No more flag paintings I vowed until I could give the timing, respect and proper attention to them.
This is that time, taking a break from my "Unusual Journey" show I pay homage, tribute and remembrance once again to the victims, their families, the rescue workers, the children too young to understand world politics and many countless others affected by the acts of cowards and political liars with this new series of flags, the only flags that will enter my website (none others I have shown publicly before).
I hope you feel the emotion and power I felt creating them, I hope you can see the emotions that flowed from me now to you, and lets all take a moment to remember, as flawed a country as we may be, I know I could never want to be the artist I am here anywhere else!
